Redeveloping Power Stations 5 a team effort
There has been much talk in recent weeks about the future of Pueblo Units 5 and rightfully so. The redevelopment of Black Hills Energy's retired downtown power plant presents a rare opportunity to revitalize the heart of the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo.
Black Hills will continue to play a key role in planning discussions, and we continue to encourage a community focused approach for the redevelopment of the area. It's important to balance the impacts on our customers with the interests and needs of our community.
For more than three years, we have been active in discussions regarding the future use of the site, and we will now take part in the planning group recently designated by Pueblo City Council.
From the beginning, our vision has been to make the former power plant facility available for redevelopment to a private buyer or to the city, as a blank canvas in a prime Riverwalk location. We hope that a realistic plan for redevelopment emerges. Absent that, we continue to believe that demolition and site remediation of Pueblo Units 5 present the lowest long term cost impacts on our customers and the greatest redevelopment flexibility nike nyc for the community.
The Pueblo Units 5 site is safe for redevelopment.
It's important to note that the site is safe for redevelopment. As we shared with The Chieftain editorial board last month, claims that the property is contaminated and not safe for redevelopment are simply not true and have been asserted without input from us.
On site environmental testing and monitoring has been in place at Pueblo Units 5 since 1991. Black Hills and its predecessors have maintained this important stewardship effort with dedicated, on site environmental engineering resources. Remediation efforts, ongoing monitoring and improvements have continued to present day.
Black Hills is the only electric utility in Colorado to be recognized as a Gold Level member of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) Environmental Leadership Program for superior environmental performance and livius and nike fanfic ongoing commitment to continual environmental improvement.
We are proud of the work done by our team and previous owners of the plant to ensure that the site meets or exceeds environmental requirements. That said, the site was designed, built and maintained for one purpose only to generate electricity. We continue to believe caution is required when considering alternative uses. This doesn't mean the site can't be repurposed, only that any incremental costs of doing so should not be passed on to utility customers.
We appreciate the efforts of Pueblo's nike 6.0 City Council and other community leaders involved in the planning group, and we remain committed to making Southern Colorado a great place to live and work. We look forward to further collaboration to help determine what comes of the space occupied by Pueblo 5
